The Elgin Delivery Project
Expanding our Efforts with Support from Conagra
Food for Greater Elgin is always doing its best to meet the needs of the hungry in the greater Elgin area. Too often, our food pantry alone just isn’t enough.
So with funding from a generous grant from Conagra, we’re launching the Elgin Delivery Project, an expansion of our Neighborhood Food Distribution Program.
We aim to make a meaningful difference in our community in three ways:
1. Deliver healthy food to pockets of poverty
Elgin officials estimate that 5% of residents don’t have access to a car, making it difficult for them to reach food pantries or large mobile food distribution events. The Elgin Delivery Project targets these high-need areas, ensuring that individuals and families can receive fresh, healthy food without the burden of travel.
2. Support Marginalized Communities
Food insecurity disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minority groups, who often face barriers to public food assistance due to concerns about citizenship status and registration requirements. SNAP participation counts against citizenship, creating fear of registration processes requiring names or addresses.
By focusing on food deserts and neighborhoods with high rates of both poverty and minorities, the project empowers those who have been historically excluded from vital nutrition programs.
3. Strengthen Families Through Shared Meals
Many food assistance programs prioritize children, but they neglect childless households or those without school-aged children. The Elgin Delivery Project is different from the typical school meal distribution: Instead of bagged lunches, we provide ingredients for home-cooked family meals that foster connection and strengthen families.
With Conagra’s generous financial support, this initiative plans to bridge the gap for Elgin residents. Stay tuned for updates on our efforts in the fight against hunger!
